"Drexciya was an electronic music band from Detroit, Michigan. The late James Stinson was the only officially identified member of Drexciya, but it was considered an open secret that he had a partner, Gerald Donald.
The majority of Drexciya's releases were in the style of harsh, dancefloor oriented Electro, punctuated with elements of retro, 1980s Detroit Techno, with occasional excursions into the Ambient and Industrial genres.
Drexciya combined a faceless, underground, anti-mainstream media stance with mythological, sci-fi narratives, to help heighten the dramatic effect of their music. In this respect they were similar to artists within and close to the Detroit collective Underground Resistance.
Their name referred to a myth comparable to Plato's myth of Atlantis, which the group revealed in the sleeve notes to their 1997 album "The Quest". "Drexciya" was an underwater country populated by the unborn children of pregnant African women thrown off of slave ships that had adapted to breathe underwater in their mother's wombs.
Reports of Drexciya's disbanding in 1997 were contradicted two years later when a new Drexciya track appeared on the Underground Resistance compilation Interstellar Fugitives, followed by three more Drexciya albums. Both Stinson and Gerald Donald continued to be prolific in their respective side projects.
Although both members of Drexciya remained completely anonymous throughout their active recording career, James Stinson was identified posthumously in 2002. The members of Drexciya have never been photographed, although they have given interviews, throughout one of which they wore Star Trek masks to conceal their identity!"

Just thought I'd put my favourite track from this EP online. The visuals are just a water-related slideshow, no thought went into the video, its more about putting the track up. This was the last record James Stinson (of Drexciya fame) created before his death. He died before he even had the chance to name the tracks, hence this is only called Lab Rat 3.

The Red Planet Project
If spiritual techno has a mother, then few would argue she's known as Red Planet. Lush synths and warm emotional chords, mixed with crisp percussive beats, all go together to create the labels unique sound. On listening to this compilation of 12'' releases, the philosophy behind the label begins to make sense, there's more here than just beautiful music, it's got ideas, feelings and messages . . . To some it just sounds great, while others may be looking, and finding something more . . . whatever . . . it's up to the listener to take as much or as little as they please. Years after their initial release, you'll still hear the likes of Derrick May and Carl Craig, along with hundreds of others, spinning these techno masterpieces. When Novarum asked Mike Banks where the inspiration came from for Red Planet, he replied that he couldn't say, as all the trax are created by an entity know as 'The Martian' . . . Now if we could only get Nasa to send a probe into deepest Detroit, perhaps all would be revealed.

Underground Resistance
Profile: Underground Resistance is probably the most militantly political outcropping of modern urban American techno. Combining a grubby, four-track aesthetic, an almost strictly DIY business philosophy, and an oppositional, militaristic ethos similar to Public Enemy without the drama (or the familiarity; the members refuse to be photographed without bandanas obscuring their identities), UR have redirected their portion of the Detroit techno legacy to social activist ends, trading mainstream popularity and financial success for independence and self-determination. Begun in the early '90s by second-wave trinity Jeff Mills, "Mad" Mike Banks, and Robert "Noise" Hood, UR adapted the flavor and kick of early Detroit techno to the complex social, political, and economic circumstances in the wake of Reagan-era accelerated inner-city decline, and was formed as an outlet for uncompromising music geared toward awareness and change.
The early UR catalog is defined by a typically Detroit combination of Motown and Chicago soul, and ruthless, at times caustic lo-fi techno, acid, and electro (Mills' background is in, among other things, Chicago industrial and EBM-style electro-techno, with Banks and Hood both coming from a solid house and techno base). Much of the label's early output was the product of various permutations of Banks, Mills, and Hood, both solo and in combination, before Mills and Hood left UR in 1992 to pursue (and achieve) international success. Banks continued to operate UR in the wake of the split, releasing EPs such as "Return of Acid Rain," "Message to the Majors," and "Galaxy to Galaxy" under the UR banner, as well as 12-inches by increasingly renowned artists such as Drexciya, Suburban Knight and Scan 7. The first actual full-length credited to Underground Resistance was 1998's Interstellar Fugitives. When the UR and Submerge Headquarters moved from 2030 Grand River to 3000 E Grand Blvd., the UR 'family' transformed again by assigning new members such as DJ 3000, S², The Aquanauts, Buzz Goree and most notably the live band Los Hermanos.
